主讲人简介
Magdalena Rybarczyk is a tutor in linguistics and literature at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. She holds a doctoral degree in Cognitive Linguistics from the University of Warsaw, Poland. She is the author of the 2015 research monograph Demonstratives and Possessives with Attitude: An Intersubjectively-Oriented Empirical Study (published by John Benjamins). Her work explores the subtle semantics of grammar and conceptual structuring, which give access to studying human intersubjective disposition and coordination. She aims to continue to offer accounts of linguistic phenomena in light of human shared social experience and non-dualistic body/mind. Not unrelated to this line of research is Rybarczyk’s keen interest in mental health and meditative practices, especially in the context of higher education.

Michael Stevens Pérez is tutor in English for Academic Purposes at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China and holds a doctorate in Education and English. His research focuses on gesture and cognition in interaction at the level of concept development, specifically within learning environments that use a foreign language as an academic lingua franca. His approach brings together methods in Cognitive Linguistics, conversation analysis, and enactive cognition to the study of embodied actions in learning, and seeks to promote local, human-centered approaches to mind.
Embedded in the theoretical framework of Cognitive Linguistics, this talk puts a spotlight on the interactional dimension of meaning by exploring the human capacity for intersubjectivity—the consideration of other minds and other bodies. We explore intersubjectivity through grammar and gesture, which—while schematic in themselves—carry the potential to shape and mold the expressive/affective space that exists between living bodies (cf. Merleau-Ponty). We argue that to give an analysis of meaning in language, it is important to know as much of the context as possible: the goals, reasons, and events that led to the situation coming forth, and the relationships between the interlocutors (and perhaps their relationships with others).
Drawing from our recently published chapter in the Handbook of Cognitive Semantics (ed. Thomas Li, Brill, 2023), we demonstrate that intersubjectivity can be studied through reformulations occurring in natural, goal-oriented talk. First, Magdalena will share her research into attitudinal and affective dimensions of grammar, specifically as manifested in Polish demonstratives and possessive pronouns (cf. Rybarczyk 2015). She will illustrate how a focus on the identities of speech participants can deepen our understanding of these core structural elements. Next, Michael will show examples of peer talk in a second language classroom, to explore the intersubjective coordination of hand gestures and facial expressions in concept development (cf. Stevens 2021).
